WORKSHOPS
Nurmes Summer Academy offers a unique opportunity for comprehensive study. In addition to private instrument teaching, the course fee includes 1-3 workshops, the descriptions of which you can find below. When registering, choose 1-3 favorite workshops.
We fill the workshops in order of registration.
1. BAROQUE WORKSHOP
Teacher: Markku Mäkinen
In the workshop, the expert organist-harpsichordist Markku Mäkinen will introduce and guide the way to the practice of performing music from the Baroque period.
In the workshop, there is an opportunity to receive guidance in both solo repertoire (pianists get to know playing the harpsichord) and continuo playing, according to the needs of each student. You can also bring baroque chamber music to the workshop!
Teaching is given in 3 x 90-minute group lessons.
2. PERFORMANCE COACHING
THROUGH THEATER EXPRESSION
Teacher: Timo Vuento
Are your hands shaking? Breathing blocked?
Is the brain hitting the panic button? In the performance training workshop, work tools are acquired for facing the performance situation with the help of various exercises and theater plays.
The workshop focuses on studying performance, becoming aware of its stages, and recognizing one's behavior in a performance situation.
Timo Vuento, an actor and director of theater expression, acts as the gentle and inspiring leader of the workshop. Participation does not require previous experience in theater or acting!
Coaching classes are given 3 x 90 minutes.
5. IMPROVISATION
Teacher: Niko Kumpuvaara
Improvisation classes introduce different styles of improvisation and improvisation exercises. The course explores improvisations through rhythm, scales, and chords, and sometimes just by feeling free.
Teaching is given in a group lesson format of 3 x 75 min and in addition, private lesson time is reserved for everyone.
The group can accommodate a limited number of participants. Places are filled in order of registration.
3. CHAMBER MUSIC
The teachers are the artists of the festival
Play chamber music in groups made up of Summer Academy students, from duos to quintets.
If you have any wishes for potential chamber music partners, please let us know when you register.
The groups and the works they work on are formed after the registration period for the Summer Academy, and the links to the sheet music will be sent to the members of the chamber music ensemble during June.
Chamber music lessons are given 3 x 60 min.

4. CHAMBER MUSIC WITH THE ARTIST
A festival artist playing in a chamber music group as a teacher
In this workshop, one of the playing members of the chamber music group is one of the artists of the festival, who also acts as the group's teacher.
The groups and the pieces they work on will be decided after the registration period for the Summer Academy, and the sheet music will be sent to the members of the chamber music ensemble in mid-June.
Chamber music lessons are given 3 x 60 min.
6. PLAYING FROM THE CORE
– PILATES
Teacher: Tommi Hyytinen
Playing from the Core – Pilates
exercises strengthen the whole body comprehensively. The movements improve the posture and strengthen especially the deep muscle groups of the body. Additionally, the movements open the breath and increase the mobility of the spine and the shoulder girdle. Shoulder support exercises teach free and supported movement of the arms. Breathing exercises create a voice production based on the support of the core muscles. Playing from the Core – Pilates helps to develop a balanced playing or singing position that is at the same time relaxed and supported.
Themes of the lessons:
1. Core support and stabilizing the lumbar spine
2. Shoulder support and stabilizing the shoulder girdle
3. Breathing and core support
4. Balanced playing/singing posture
Teaching is given 4x75 minutes.
The workshop is suitable for everyone, regardless of previous experience, and it is also possible to participate in the group on a one-time basis.
The group can accommodate a limited number of participants. Places are filled in order of registration.
