Nurmes Summer Academy organizes annual masterclasses in cooperation with Savonlinna Summer University. The summer academy is part of the Summer University's liberal arts education, and state aid is channeled through the summer university to organize it. The cooperation between the two educational organizations brings stability and predictability to the operation.
Savonlinna Summer University is maintained by an association whose members include the city of Savonlinna, the municipality of Enonkoski, the University of Eastern Finland, the association of educational municipalities of Eastern Savo, and the regional association of Southern Savo. The Summer University was founded in 1964. Main areas of operation are the open university, music and culture, as well as continuing education for municipalities and other public administrations in particular.
The Summer University supports the development of the cultural and tourism image of the Savonlinna region with a wide offer of education and events during the summer season. The main partners in Savonlinna are the Savonlinna Academy of Music, the Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Savonlinna campus of the University of Eastern Finland, and the cultural associations of the region. The goal of Savonlinna Summer University is also to build a wider Eastern Finnish music and art education network with partners and independent operatives.
Savonlinna Summer University operates as a cooperative educational institution of the Sibelius Academy of the Arts in Eastern Finland. Savonlinna Music Academy's master classes have been accepted as part of the Sibelius Academy's curriculum, and students can register as open university students and receive a Sibelius Academy certificate for completed credits. Part of the teaching at the Nurmes Summer Academy is also implemented as open university courses.
